Balwinder Safri dies aged 63

Bhangra legend Balwinder Safri has died after spending months fighting for his life in hospital. The 63-year-old appeared to be making a ‘miracle’ recovery after being discharged from New Cross Hospital, in Wolverhampton, earlier this month.

But today his family confirmed the music star, who rose to fame with the Safri Boyz, had sadly died. The Punjabi singer, from Birmingham, formed the bhangra group in 1990 and gained popularity with a string of hits including ‘Rahaye Rahaye’ and ‘Chan Mere Makhna’.

Safri was admitted to the hospital on April 20 following concerns about his heart. He had a planned triple bypass two days later but suffered complications and was taken back to theatre for further surgery.

The singer remained in a coma after CT scans showed signs of damage to his brain, with medics telling his family to prepare for the worst.

After 27 days in critical care, Safri was moved to ward B8 where loved ones heard him utter his first words since waking from the coma. He continued to recover and was discharged from the hospital after 86 days. However he lost his life on the 26th JULY 2022.
