For the past few years Brit Asia TV have launched a programme a little similar to the X Factor, where contestants are asked to perform and sing a song in order to win the competition and receive promising deals for their future career.
What bugs me is, what is the competition exactly?
Those of you who may have followed the programme or maybe even seen a few episodes here and there, may know what I’m talking about.
Let’s start with the actual contestants.
Can they sing? Simple question and to be honest a very simple answer.. “not really”. However I don’t want to give my opinion as a whole because I do believe there are the few odd people going on the show with talent which could be pursued further with a little guidance etc, but the majority of people are seriously wasting their time.
What I fail to understand is, half the people on the show genuinely cannot sing and have never had dreams of being a singer, yet still decide to go on the show, then get let down when they receive critical feedback. Do their family and friends not warn them before going on the show? I mean if a member of my family wanted to be a part of the competition but had never sang in their entire life, I’d literally stop them from embarrassing themselves there and then.
Now if we take a look at the panel, which consists of 5 judges: Balwinder Safri, Tasha Tah,Shin from DCS, Tru Skool and XS Bass – you’d think they would want to change certain things about the show having already got a name within the industry.
Although they may be honest and critical with their opinions, are they really taking the show seriously? Are they really giving a “yes” to those who deserve a recording deal? Are they thinking about who they’re putting through to the semi’s? Or is it just all fun and games and picking a few for entertainments sake? We really can’t be sure.
But is the quality of the programme up to standards? Could they not improve?
To be honest, the structure of the programme isn’t very professional to say the least. The steps in order to apply for the competition entail a short video clip filmed on your phone – which then gets sent to the judges in order for them to pick who get’s to perform live infront of them. Now if you’ve watched the show, you will see that there are very few people who can actually sing, so does the quality of the show really come down to the panel and who they’re picking? Hmmmm, something to think about?
I guess what I’m really trying to say is why can we not make good quality programmes just like everyone else? We may not have the stage for the X Factor or powerful figures such as Simon Cowell, but we do have the ability to put together something professional if we want to and we also have great recording artists such as Shin and Tru Skool who are there to help pursue those careers.
Contestants are told they will be awarded with recording deals and artists have promised them a music career, but is that really happening? Is it actually working? Have we noticed someone spark and make it big once they win the competition? As far as I’m concerned, not really. So is the purpose of the show meaningless? Have the past few winners of the show expected the outcome they received now? Have they got better careers? Are they singing and performing like they thought they would be?
A lot of question marks are put to mind, but I suppose the only way to find out if the show has improved or not is when we find an actual superstar to come out of the competition itself.
