DOES MUSIC PLAY A BIG PART TO PEOPLES PERCEPTIONS ON CASTE?’’
‘’DO YOU THINK MUSIC PLAYS A BIG PART WHEN IT COMES TO PEOPLES PERCEPTIONS ON CASTE?’’
Not a lot of people wish to discuss this topic, but whether or not we like it, we all know it’s a touchy subject and it will pop up somewhere or another.
I’m not one to be preach nor am I an extremely religious individual, but correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t think the Holy Book says we’re all different and should apply the caste system wherever we go. However, as much as we hate to accept it – we all know this still happens and there are still people out there who tend to follow this theory [usually the older generation] – but why?

But when it comes to the Bhangra industry and its lyrics, it seems the younger generation, although they don’t seem to think much of the caste system on a daily basis, they do however seem to get quite defensive when it comes to music. So is music to blame???
We all know some of the biggest hits in Bhangra have the tendency to mention the term ‘Jatt’. For example, Putt Jattan De, Je Jatt Bigar Gya, Desi Jatt… just to name a few! Now the point of the matter is, what context do people actually take this in? Although the songs aren’t talking about one being better than the other, majority would agree, by using the term ‘Jatt’ clearly makes others feel as though their different. Surely this shouldn’t have to occur in the first place.

Have you ever thought about it? Are you one of them individuals who listen to music regardless of the words? Does the caste system offend you or not? Would you listen to songs talking about a caste different to yours? Does it matter?
Many questions arise when thinking about the topic, but you’d think in todays day and age artists would avoid mentioning anything caste related within their songs to help change peoples mentality maybe? Hmmm…
[youtube id=”yKFB68VuZ40″ width=”620″ height=”360″]Or maybe music isn’t to blame at all, but instead education and morals play more of a big impact? Maybe peoples understanding on the topic itself is what causes this differentiation to happen.
I suppose we will never find an answer?
But just remember, we all have two eyes, two ears, one nose and one mouth. We’re all human! We’re all equal! #PREACH
